What changed
Claude Code 2.1.197 was released on June 30, 2026. Claude Sonnet 5 is now the default model in Claude Code, with a native 1M-token context window.
Key improvements
-
Claude Sonnet 5 is now the default model
Using Sonnet 5 in Claude Code previously meant picking the model yourself. As of 2.1.197 it is the default, so agentic work — making plans, using browsers and terminals, and running autonomously — runs on Sonnet 5 without any manual selection.
-
Native 1M-token context window
Large codebases and long sessions hit the context limit first. Sonnet 5 supports a native 1M-token context window, so more files and conversation history fit and are processed in a single context.
Notes
- Pricing — promotional pricing of $2/$10 per Mtok (input/output) applies through August 31, 2026.
- How to get it — update to version 2.1.197 for access to Sonnet 5.
- More on the model — for details on Sonnet 5 itself, see the Introducing Claude Sonnet 5 update.
