Overview
Anthropic released Claude for Word, a Microsoft Word add-in that puts Claude inside your document instead of a separate window. You can draft, edit, and review .docx / .docm files with Claude without leaving Word.
Edits come back as native Word tracked changes, so they slot into the existing review pane — accept or reject each one the way you would with a human editor. Claude preserves the document’s heading styles, numbering, and formatting while rewriting only what you select.
Getting started
- Install: Get Claude for Word on the Microsoft Marketplace listing via Get it now, then activate the add-in in Word and sign in with your Claude credentials.
- Available on: Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise (currently beta).
- Supported formats:
.docxand.docm.

Key features
-
Native tracked changes
Claude’s edits appear as native Word tracked changes, reviewable in Word’s standard review pane. Accept or reject each one alongside human edits without a separate diff view.
-
Template-based drafting
Open your template and describe what you need. Claude writes in your document’s heading and bullet styles, with citations back to source documents so you can trace every claim.
-
Comment-thread responses
Claude reads threaded comments, edits the anchored text, and replies in the thread with a summary of what changed — useful for clearing review rounds on contracts or long documents.
-
Consistency checking
Claude flags inconsistent defined terms, broken cross-references, and numbering errors across the full document — the kind of issues that are easy to miss in long, clause-heavy files.
-
Selective rewriting
Highlight text and request edits like tone shifts or passive-voice removal. Claude preserves surrounding styles, numbering, and formatting and rewrites only the selection.
-
Semantic search
Find every provision touching a theme with semantic navigation, not just keyword search.
-
Skills for reusable workflows
Package repeatable workflows — contract review checklists, report tone passes — as reusable Skills your team can share.
Primary use cases
- Contract and MOU drafting with defined-term consistency checks
- Tone and style passes across long proposals and reports
- Clearing legal / compliance comment threads
- Filling template-driven weekly reports and meeting notes
- Final review of documents with heavy cross-references and numbered clauses
Notes
- Currently in beta — available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise.
- Chat history isn’t saved between sessions. Data is deleted after 30 days (with temporary caching).
- No audit logs or observability yet — not recommended for regulated final deliverables without human review.
- Not recommended for litigation filings or sensitive deliverables without human review.
- Be cautious with untrusted documents: Claude for Word is vulnerable to prompt injection from instructions hidden in document content.
